Mad Season - Live @ Crocodile Cafe, Seattle, USA, 12-10-1994

NOTE: Mad Season was an American rock supergroup formed in Seattle, Washington in 1994 by members of three popular Seattle-based bands: Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees. Mad Season released only one album, Above, and is best known for the single "River of Deceit". The band went on a semi-permanent hiatus in 1996 due to the band members' conflicting schedules and vocalist Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse. Attempts were made in the late 1990s to revive the group without Staley; however, the band dissolved following the death of bassist John Baker Saunders in 1999. Staley died three years later of a drug overdose. (from Wikipedia)

Nirvana - Live @ Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, USA, 08-01-1994

NOTE: It was 22 years ago today... that Nirvana played their last American gig in Seattle.

Listening to this set, there is nothing to suggest that this would be the last time the trio of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would perform as Nirvana on American soil. It's a rip-roaring set with a passionate Cobain apparently in command. Whatever demons that had been haunting him were cast aside for the night and Nirvana sounded like they could take on the world. After all, their third album, In Utero, debuted at No. 1 in September 1993 and the group played practically the entire album (with the exception of Very Ape and Tourette's).

After the Seattle gig, Nirvana embarked on a European tour, with stops in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Live @ Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, USA, 13-06-2003

NOTE: Despite the revolving jam sessions, this was a crowd with a long attention span, and the festival's best stretches were when bands just held their own for long chunks of time. Neil Young, on Friday, performed with his three-decade-old band, Crazy Horse, under a custardy full moon. For three hours he played expanded versions, some of them 29 minutes long, of his best songs"Love to Burn," "Cortez the Killer," "Cinnamon Girl" and others. He was the only soloist, breaking to solo at length several times per song. Playing in his ragged, stuttering phrases, he made strings of notes crumble into noise, then recohere toward graceful endings. (The festival's excellent concert sound made his guitar tone feel a mile thick.) It was extraordinary, the ideal of a gnarled yet sophisticated technique." (from New York Times)
