NOTE: RIP magazine's fifth anniversary party at the Hollywood Palladium Sunday night. In keeping with the heavy-metal music mag's understated tone, the invite called it a "Blowout/Massacre/Party/Whatever!"

A 4,000-strong crowd of alcohol-enriched head-banging metal heads out to see bands including Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Spinal Tap, Thunder and Screaming Jets.

A "special surprise guest" (rumored to be Metallica) was supposed to play, but it was announced that there was a mix up but the night wasn't over and, "... so the Seattle theme continues ... ladies and gentlemen, Temple of the Dog!" Now the crowd has dwindled to only 500 people, but three songs are performed: 'Hunger Strike,' 'Reach Down' and 'Pushin' Forward Back.'

This is an awesome 1990 show! It sounds so crisp and alive... it's a great recording with nearly perfect sound. Contains a rare performance of the unreleased song "Verse Chorus Verse".

During "Love Buzz," Kurt jumped into the audience and allowed members of the crowd to play his guitar for a minute before going back onstage. Dale Crover on the back vocals and drums.

Sonic Youth and Stone Temple Pilots also played.
